Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (23-2, 13 KOs) has taken over another division as he defeated Rolly Romero (17-3, 13 KOs) by majority decision to capture Romero’s WBA belt and become a three-division world champion at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The judges scored the fight 114-114, 115-113, and 116-112.
Romero hurt Lopez in the fifth round, opening a cut above Lopez’s right eye. He also hurt Lopez late in the 11th round, but outside of those moments, Lopez controlled most of the remaining action.
According to punch stats, Lopez, who landed a career-high 62 jabs, outlanded Romero 124 to 73.
Despite Lopez landing more punches, Romero felt he was robbed.
“I got hit with two punches the whole fight that barely grazed me,” he said. “I was never in any trouble. When I heard 114-114, I knew it was a robbery.”
Lopez, who was coming off a January loss to Shakur Stevenson, believed his experience made the difference.
“He was staying composed and listening to his corner,” Lopez said. “We had to push the fight. He hit me with a shot that woke me up. I told him he has to do better than that. I was just buzzed. I got right back to it. I stayed cool, calm, and collected. We have the ring experience. That’s what’s helped me throughout my journey.”
What’s Next?
Lopez, who wasn’t particularly impressive in this fight, may have to face mandatory challenger Jack Catterall next, but obviously, there are some big fights out there for him, including WBO 147-pound champion Devin Haney or WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia (if he gets by Conor Benn).
As for Romero, his power and entertaining style should keep him in contention for meaningful fights. He appeared to have a real opportunity against Lopez, but his limited output ultimately cost him. When Romero reviews the fight, he may regret not being more aggressive.
