In a shocking upset, Lani Daniels stopped Shadasia Green in the ninth round to capture Green’s IBF, WBO, and Ring 168-pound titles at Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

After the fight, Green was taken out on a stretcher by medical personnel and transported to a local hospital.  Daniels would also go to the hospital.

Daniels(12-4-2, 2 KOs) and Green(16-2, 11 KOs) went back and forth throughout the fight, but Daniels started to separate herself in the 8th round as Green began to tire.

In the 9th round, the 36-year-old Green barely got off the stool and was swarmed by Daniels against the ropes. The 37-year-old Daniels began to tee off on Green with no response, and the referee waved it off with 0:32 in the round.

At the post-fight press conference, MVP Head of Boxing, Mike Leanardi, gave an update on Green.

“Shadiasia is awake and talkative,” Leanardi said. “It was a scary moment for all of us. She’s looking much better.”

Daniels also got a performance bonus after the win, and Leanardi explained why.

We had two performance of the night bonuses,” he said. “One is going to Lani Daniels, upsetting the card, and becoming the unified super middleweight champion. Heck of a performance by her.”

Daniels’ performance ruined whatever plans anyone had for Green, who came off her best win last July when she beat Savannah Marshall, to fight undisputed heavyweight champion, Claressa Shields.

Green and Shields have gone back and forth on social media for a long time now, and this fight was supposed to bring Green closer to a fight with Shields, but that’s probably not happening in the near future, and possibly ever, which is unfortunate because it had some decent buildup.

Going forward, Green is going to have to get right physically and deal with the mental toll of taking a stoppage loss to Daniels.
