WBO/Ring Magazine 140-pound champion Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) will battle WBC 135-pound champion Shakur Stevenson on Saturday, January 31, in New York as the headline event for ‘The Ring 6,’ HE Turki Alalshikh and Matchroom Boxing announced on Monday.
The fight will take 140 pounds. No word on the venue, but according to the promoters, further details, including ticketing, venue, and additional fights on the card, will be announced.
In his last fight, the 28-year-old Lopez dominated Arnold Barboza in Times Square, and the Brooklyn native will now be defending his titles in his hometown once again.
“Duck, Duck, Goose!” Lopez said in a statement. “Are you ready for New York City? Brick city in the concrete jungle, so let’s get ready to rumble! The Takeover is here to stay, not play. Make Boxing Great Again is my forte. Shakur will fall in nine.”
Stevenson, who will be making his debut at 140 pounds, will be fighting just a few miles from his hometown of Newark, New Jersey. This fight represents an opportunity to become a four-weight world champion. In his last outing, the 28-year-old Stevenson claimed a unanimous decision win against mandatory challenger William Zepeda to retain his WBC lightweight belt.
“I have never shied away from a challenge and always chased the biggest fights in the sport because I know I am one of the best boxers in the world,” Stevenson said in a statement. Teofimo Lopez will learn that firsthand on January 31 when I take his belt and show him that there are levels to this game. New York, get ready for a spectacular performance as I take over a fourth straight weight division.”
This is an excellent fight between two very skilled fighters, and these are the types of fights boxing fans want.
