Headlining in his hometown for the first time in over eight years, Australian native George Kambosos Jr. had a successful homecoming as he defeated Jake Wyllie by unanimous decision at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on Saturday.
Despite a challenging moment in Round 9 where he sustained a cut from a clash of heads, Kambosos, the former undisputed champion who moved up to 140 pounds, displayed remarkable resilience, weathering the storm and emerging victorious.
Two judges scored the fight 117-111, and another judge had it 115-113.
Wyllie, the Australian National Champion who stepped in to replace the injured original opponent Daud Yordan at under a week’s notice, put up a good fight. However, Kambosos’s victory was expected, and he was the better man.
Kambosos moves on and is in line to face IBF 140-pound champion Richardson Hitchins, and Kambosos says he’s ready to capture his second world title.
“A win is a win, and we move on to what comes next. Sh**-chins won’t fight nowhere near as hard as him [Jake Wyllie]. Hitchins, let’s go! I want to fight you to-to-toe. I know Hitchins is a tip-tap kind of guy and he will try and hit and run. I’m a warrior. I boxed beautifully for the first five rounds. We’ll get this cut cleaned up, and we’ll be ready.
“Eddie [Hearn], let’s do it. I’m all in, and I want to fight the best of the best. If Hitchins is your best guy, then let him fight toe-to-toe with me. End of June? Bring it on.”
Based on this performance, Kambosos, who is 2-3 in his last five fights, probably won’t beat Hitchins, but anything is possible.
