Canelo: ‘I’ve fought everyone, and I can do what I want’

CANELO VS MUNGUIA

Undisputed 168-pound world champion Canelo Álvarez proved once again why he is the king of the division on Saturday night when he dropped and defeated Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas(PBC Prime/DAZN PPV).

After 12 rounds, the judges had the following scores: 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112, all for Alvarez.

Munguia had some early success in the all-Mexican clash during Cinco de Mayo weekend, but the fourth round changed it all. Alvarez(61-2-2, 30 KOs) hit Munguia with a left hook-uppercut that put him on the mat for the first time in his career. Alvarez took control from there.

According to CompuBox (663-536), Munguia(43-1, 34 KOs) threw more punches, but Alvarez was more accurate and landed the harder shots(234-170).

After the fight, Alvarez applauded Mungia for his effort.

“This win means a lot,” Alvarez said. “Munguia is a great fighter. He’s strong and smart. But I have 12 rounds to win the fight and I did. I did really good and I’m proud of it. He’s strong, but he’s a little slow. I could see every punch. That’s why I’m the best.”\

According to Munguia, he would still be undefeated if it were any other opponent.

“There’s no doubt I would have beaten anyone else tonight,” said Munguia. “He has a lot of experience. I started well, but he’s a fighter who creates a lot of problems.”

Obviously, the fight to be made is against David Benavidez, and Alvarez made it clear after the fight that he was willing to fight anybody.

“When I retire, my numbers will say what position I’m in,” Alvarez said. “I know there’s a lot of great Mexican fighters in the past, but I’m the best fighting right now. I’m gonna rest and enjoy my family. If the money is right, I can fight right now. I’ve fought everyone, and I can do what I want.”

No one is surprised by Saturday night’s result. Canelo is the better fighter. We’ll see what’s next for Alvarez. There are rumors that it could be Edgar Berlanga, but we know it should be Benavidez. Hopefully, that is next.
