Giants’ Daboll on DeVito: ‘He’s improving’

New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito has done it again!

DeVito led the Giants on a game-winning drive against the Packers, ending with a Randy Bullock 37-yard field goal at the buzzer as New York defeated Green Bay 24-22 at MetLife Stadium on Monday night.

The Giants won their third consecutive game and improved to 5-8.

On the eight-play, 57-yard drive, which took 1:39 seconds, DeVito was 4-for-4 for 53 yards.

Before the drive, DeVito, who became the first undrafted rookie quarterback to win three straight starts without an interception in NFL history, told his teammate the following in the huddle.

“Let’s go win the game,” he said after the win. “It’s on us, on the offense.”

DeVito discussed his initial reaction after Bullock made the game-winning field goal.

“Oh, I was standing next to Dabs (head coach Brian Daboll),” he said. “I don’t know if he wants me saying this, but at first, he wasn’t going to look. And then he was like, I’m going to look, and I was like alright. So, we stood right next to each other, and it was just, as soon as we saw it go in, just pure excitement. I grabbed him, hugged him, told him I loved him and celebrated with my teammates.”

The undrafted rookie free agent, who improved to 3-1 as a starter, enjoyed being in position to help his team win.

“I mean, you enjoy it when it’s an outcome like this, right?” he said. “I mean, I enjoy being on the field any play, no matter what play it is, so just try to enjoy it.”

The New Jersey native finished the game completing 17 of 21 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions for a passer rating of 113.9 – his third game with a rating higher than 100.0. In addition, he has not thrown an interception in his last 87 passes.

DeVito also rushed for 71 yards on ten carries.

Giants coach Brian Daboll was happy with what DeVito is doing for the team.

“It’s his job,” Daboll said. “Third game of over a hundred quarterback rating. He made good decisions, took care of the ball, used him in the run game. Just keep developing him. He’s improving. Still got stuff to work on, but like I said two or three times last week, I think he’s a young player that’s doing the right things and making the most of his opportunity. He earned the right to play today, and he earned the right to play the next week. The kid’s done a good job.”

DeVito is getting the job done for the Giants, and they are now one game behind the Packers(6-7) and four other teams for the final wild-card spot; who knew that the Giants would play meaningful football in December, and if they keep winning, maybe they’ll play a meaningful game in the postseason.
