Floyd Mayweather, even in retirement, finds ways to keep himself in the news. Last month, he announced via Instagram that he was looking to return in December to fight Manny Pacquiao. On Tuesday, he told TMZ Sports that he is interested in fighting UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov in a boxing match. Recently, Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in Las Vegas.
However, according to lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, who recently inked a 11-fight, $365 million deal with DAZN, these type of fights are not good for the sport of boxing.
“He(Mayeather) wants to continue hurting boxing by making fights that don’t make sense, by making fights that hurt boxing,” Canelo told TMZ Sports. “And not giving boxing the credibility it deserves, which is such a nice sport, which has given him so much. If he wants to return, I ask him to look my way to give a great fight to the fans.”
Mayweather dominated Canelo in their fight in 2013; a fight Mayweather won by majority decision.
For the 41-year-old Mayweather, it’s all about the money, and who can blame him at this point in his life. He is looking to fight individuals that are not significant threats and will make him the most money. Thus the reason he fought UFC star Conor McGregor in 2017.
If he is going to return, I like to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao, but if he fights Khabib, I guess I would be interested enough to buy it.
