Actor Jake Allyn is from Texas, and so is the character he plays on “The Quad” BoJohn Folsom. Like his character BoJohn, Allyn did not know much about HBCU life before joining the hit BET show. Allyn joined Go4it’s Paul Gant and talked about his knowledge of HBCUs before getting the role of BoJohn.
“I remember getting the script, and on the title page, it kind of had a little description of HBCUs, and it had how many African Americans had attended them, and kind of the history about them all,” said Allyn. “I knew about predominantly black schools and things like that. I knew they existed, but I didn’t know the history behind it all and didn’t know what I learned now, which is kind of HBCU culture. For me, it was amazing, especially playing a character who is in the exact same boat as me.
Fortunately for Allyn, one of his castmates taught him a bit about HBCU culture. “My roommate on the show Miles Stroter actually went to Morehouse, so he got to take me around a little bit, and I like to say he guided me through HBCU culture.”
Make sure you check out Jake Allyn on “The Quad” Wednesdays at 10pmet/9pmct on BET.
Actor Kevin Savage plays a college quarterback on the hit series “The Quad” at the fictitious Georgia A&M. Savage talked about his first experience on an HBCU campus and Howard homecoming with Go4it’s Paul Gant.
“It’s funny because my ex, she’s my ex now; I was with her for seven years, man, and she went to Howard,” Savage said. “If you know anything about Howard, you know about their homecoming. You know, man, they throw the best homecoming,” said Savage. “So, my first time experiencing HBCU life was being on campus during homecoming at Howard.”
Savage talked about returning to school, and when asked what school he had in mind, he said this: “Definitely Howard because that was my first experience, man, and they’re a great university. If I choose to go back, that would be the school I’m doing. Howard all day! HU!”

There has been a lot of buzz about BET’s hit show “The Quad.” It is a show about football, HBCU college life, and so much more! Actor Kevin Savage joined Go4it’s Paul Gant to discuss the show. Savage tells a story about how he auditioned three times for other roles on the show before he landed the role of Terrance.
“When I auditioned for “The Quad,” I auditioned for three different roles and actually did not get any of the three roles I auditioned for,” said Savage. “They called and said hey you’re booked, but you booked the quarterback role. I said okay, cool, let’s do it! Who does not want to play a quarterback on a TV show.”
Along the way, Savage had to work hard to play a quarterback on TV successfully. “When I got out there and threw the ball they were like, okay, he is clearly not a quarterback. Embarrassing! It was humbling at the same time, but I got the chance to work on it in between the pilot and when we actually started shooting the series. So, when I came back, man, my arm was a lot better, and we got it in.”
