Eagles’ Hurts to miss Panthers game with blood clot

The Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) will be without quarterback Jalen Hurts on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers (2-2) at Lincoln Financial Field due to a blood clot in his right calf, the team announced Thursday.

The team did not provide a timetable for his return.

Without Hurts, backup quarterback Tanner McKee will get the start against the Panthers.

According to the Eagles, Hurts reported being cleated in the calf during the Week 4 game against the Rams.

“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf,” the Eagles said in a statement. “He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report.

“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.

“On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”

Hurts discussed the injury at his weekly press conference on Wednesday.

“It was a very unique experience, to say the least,” he said. “I don’t want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game and whatnot, but I got nicked up in the Rams game.”

This season, the 28-year-old Hurts has thrown for 933 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Hurts and the Eagles offense have struggled, especially in the second half, when they haven’t scored a touchdown since Week 2.

The Eagles are currently on a three-game losing streak, and injuries have played a role.

Philadelphia’s offensive line is also dealing with injuries. The unit has undergone further changes following Cam Jurgens’ departure via trade and Lane Johnson’s retirement.

Additionally, DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley have been out due to hamstring injuries.

If Smith and Barkley remain sidelined, McKee will face an additional challenge, putting more pressure on Philadelphia’s defense.
