The Pistons made it official Tuesday, announcing that they had signed forward Ausar Thompson to a contract extension.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, it is afive-year, $155 million rookie-scale contract extension.
Earlier this month, Thompson’s twin brother, Amen, signed a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension with the Houston Rockets.
The Thompson Twins, who became the first siblings in NBA history to have $100 million contracts, will earn a combined $363 million over the next five years.
Last season, Ausar Thompson made the NBA All-Defensive First Team and finished third in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting, averaging 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and an NBA-best 2.6 steals per contest. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Thompson averaged a career-high 0.95 blocks per game in 2025-26 and recorded a steal in 64 of 73 games played.
Additionally, Thompson led the NBA with seven games with at least three steals and two blocks and became just the fifth player in the last 40 years to have 145 steals, 415 rebounds, and 65 blocks in a single season before turning 24.
In his career, Thompson has appeared in 195 games (158 starts) for Detroit across three seasons, averaging 9.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.6 steals in 24.7 minutes per game.
Thompson is already one of basketball’s best wing defenders. Along with Cade Cunningham and potentially restricted free agent Jalen Duren, he could be part of a long-term core capable of making Detroit a consistent threat in the Eastern Conference.
