The New York Giants ended the preseason on Friday night after defeating the New York Jets, 23-6, at MetLife Stadium.
One of the biggest remaining storylines is what the Giants will do with veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Against the Jets, the 33-year-old caught three passes for 53 yards.
Giants head coach John Harbaugh discussed Beckham’s performance against the Jets.
“I thought he played well,” Harbaugh said. “I thought he played well. Got open. Just a fingernail away from that completion and maybe a step away from a touchdown, so he looked good out there.”
Later, Harbaugh was asked if Beckham, who was drafted by the team in 2014 and spent five years with New York, would make the team, and Harbaugh was noncommittal.
“I don’t want to like say exactly who’s making it right now and not, what the considerations are,” he said. “And things can happen. But I think I would answer the question yes. I mean, I think he has done enough to make an NFL roster for sure. He’s played well, and he’s gotten better as his camp’s gone along. He deserves credit for that. He’s done a really good job with it.”
According to Beckham, making the Giants would mean “everything.”
“Everything,” Beckham said. “It would mean everything to me if I made it.”
It would be a great story if Beckham completed his comeback by returning to the Giants. He is no longer the player he was during his first stint with New York, but he may still be able to contribute in a limited role.
Regardless of what the Giants decide, Beckham appears to be in a good place. After battling injuries, he is healthy again and has shown he can still help an NFL team.
The only question is whether the Giants believe he can help them.
