The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard Donovan Mitchell to a multi-year contract extension, the team officially announced on Thursday.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, it’s a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension that includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker.
The 29-year-old Mitchell, who could have waited until next year to sign the extension, which would have given him more years and money, has now signed his second extension with the Cavs since being traded to the team from the Jazz in 2022.
Mitchell helped lead the Cavaliers to an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals this past season, the Cavs’ first since 2018. It marked Mitchell’s first career appearance in the Conference Finals.
Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman says Mitchell and the organization have a shared vision to win a title in Cleveland.
“Donovan has embodied exactly what it means to represent the Cleveland Cavaliers on and off the floor,” said Altman in a statement. “From day one, he embraced this organization, our fans, and our community… He’s been clear in his desire to be here, and that speaks volumes about who he is… Securing Donovan long-term reflects our shared vision and our commitment to building toward another NBA championship in Cleveland.”
Mitchell appeared in 70 games (all starts) this past season for Cleveland, averaging 27.9 points (seventh-best in NBA), 5.7 assists (23rd in NBA), 4.5 rebounds, and 1.49 steals (14th in NBA) in 33.5 minutes. He was also selected to his seventh NBA All-Star Game. The 6-3 guard earned All-NBA Second Team honors this past season as well, marking his third career All-NBA selection, all coming with the Cavaliers. He also became the second player in Cavaliers history to average at least 27.0 points per game in multiple seasons, joining LeBron James (seven times).
During the 2026 Playoffs, Mitchell averaged 26.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.17 steals in 36.2 minutes over 18 games (all starts). He scored 30 or more points in six postseason games.
Since joining the Cavaliers in 2022, Mitchell already ranks second in both 30-point games (105) and 40-point games (25) and owns the second-highest career scoring average in franchise history (26.7), behind only James (27.2). The No. 13 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft holds career averages of 25.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.39 steals in 33.8 minutes over 609 games (601 starts) in nine NBA seasons with Cleveland and Utah.
