We waited 10 years for it to happen, and whether you like it or not, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will fight again on September 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Netflix announced on Monday, which will air the fight.
No word on the weight, rounds, and rules for the fight, but it is expected to be a sanctioned bout.
Mayweather(50-0, 27 KOs) and Pacquiao(62-8-3, 39 KOs) fought each other in 2015 at 147 pounds, where Mayweather would win by unanimous decision.
The 49-year-old Mayweather, who has fought in multiple exhibition bouts, retired from boxing in 2017 after defeating MMA star Conor McGregor, while the 47-year-old Pacquiao fought to a draw with then WBC 147-pound champion Mario Barrios last summer.
Mayweather is expected to fight Mike Tyson in an exhibition bout this spring, and Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Ruslan Provodnikov in an exhibition bout on April 18.
Both Mayweather and Pacquiao made a lot of money in their careers, and it appears that both fighters need the money at this stage of their lives, especially Mayweather, who reportedly made over a billion dollars in fight purses, filed a $340 million lawsuit against Showtime and former Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza, which alleges financial fraud.
We saw what Pacquiao looked like against Barrios. Pacquiao had his moments in that fight, but it was clear he was not the same fighter he was years ago, which is expected given his age.
However, we haven’t seen what Mayweather looks like in the ring, so you wonder what he has left to give in the ring. Mayweather’s biggest asset is his “0,” and while fighting anyone is a risk at his age, I don’t think he takes this fight unless he thinks he can win, so he might know something.
Look, because both fighters are older now, we could get a much more exciting fight than we got 10 years ago, which should be appetizing to the viewing public. Look, hate or love it, this fight will do big numbers, and no matter how you feel about it, it’s intriguing.
