On Wednesday, the Philadelphia 76ers announced that they have signed guard Cameron Payne.
According to reports, Payne’s contract will be for the rest of the season.
Payne joins the 76ers after spending part of the 2025-26 season in Belgrade, Serbia, with KK Partizan, where he averaged 11.6 points, 3.8 assists, 1.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 21.9 minutes in 15 games.
The 10-year veteran last played in the NBA for the Knicks during the 2024-25 season, averaging 6.9 points and 2.8 assists in 72 games.
Payne returns to Philadelphia after competing in 31 games (eight starts) for the 76ers in 2023-24 after being acquired by the team in a mid-season trade. He averaged 9.3 points and shot 38.2 percent from beyond the arc, to go along with 3.1 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game.
The last time Payne was in Philly, Tyrese Maxey was turning himself into a star, and now Maxey is an All-Star starter for the first time in his career, and Payne has been impressed.
“That man took a crazy jump,” Payne said about Maxey. “I feel like he took a crazy jump from last year to this year… The efficiency is crazy. He’s actually changed his game from the last two seasons I was here, so that’s really big time. He’s really taking a huge step.”
The 31-year-old is looking forward to playing with 76ers rookie guard VJ Edgecombe, who has impressed him.
“That man’s a dog,” Payne said after practice today. “He attacks the rim crazy. It kinda looks like he’s been in the league a little bit longer than just being a rookie. I’m looking forward to playing alongside him.”
At times, Payne gave the 76ers some decent minutes the last time he was in Philly, and with the trade of Jared McCain, Payne could get some valuable minutes this time around.
