76ers trade McCain to Thunder for draft picks

After a standout rookie season, which was cut short by a torn meniscus in his left knee, fans were excited by Jared McCain’s return this season.

However, the 21-year-old has been inconsistent after his return from injury. Ultimately, the 76ers decided to move on

The 76ers sent McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for a 2026 first-round draft pick, a 2027 second-round draft pick – the most favorable between Oklahoma City, Houston, Indiana, and Miami – and two 2028 second-round draft picks (Milwaukee & Oklahoma City), the teams announced on Wednesday.

Philadelphia will receive the more favorable of 2026 first-round draft picks between the LA Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder, provided, however, that in the event that Houston’s pick is conveyed to Oklahoma City (protected 1-4), then Philadelphia will instead receive the second most favorable of picks between the LA Clippers, Oklahoma City, and Houston.

Last season, McCain, who was originally selected by the 76ers with the 16th overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, averaged 15.3 points in 23 games, but after the injury, he has struggled this season.

In 37 games this season, McCain, in a reduced role, is averaging 6.6 points.

From my standpoint, the 76ers got decent draft capital for a player who really did not have much of a role after the emergence of rookie V.J. Edgecombe. Plus, Quentin Grimes is better than McCain, so again, he really did not have a role with the team.

It could also be a salary dump to help the team avoid paying the luxury tax, or they could have a bigger move planned. No matter what, it’s still a good move.

The 76ers, who have won five straight, continue their five-game road trip on Los Angeles against the Lakers on Thursday night
