On November 14 at Miami’s Kaseya Center(Netflix), Jake Paul(12-1, 7 KOs) will battle WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis(30-0-1, 28 KOs) in a 12-round exhibition fight with 12-ounce gloves at the maximum weight of 195 pounds.
On Monday night at a press conference at Palladium Theater in New York City, MVP Promotions head Nakisa Bidarian laid out the rules for this exhibition fight.
“There will be a victor because the fighters have agreed and the commission has approved,” Bidarian said. “A maximum weight of 195 pounds for this exhibition. The fight will be contested over 10 three-minute rounds, and when Tank and Jake enter the squared circle to go to battle, they will be wearing 12-ounce gloves. Sitting ringside will be three commission-approved world-class professional judges that will score every round to ensure there’s a decisive outcome for the fight if it goes the distance. And both men are enrolled in the highest level of testing with USADA.”
In his last fight, which was a win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Paul weighed in at 199.5 pounds, so he’ll have the size advantage over Davis, and Paul discussed the advantages he has over his opponent.
“I would say a lot of things, but I think first and foremost is going to be my reach, my size, and being able to keep him away,” Paul explained. “I think there’s a lot of holes in his defense that a lot of people haven’t exposed before.”
Davis, who weighed in at 133.5 pounds in his last fight, which was a draw against Lamont Roach, says he’s faster than his opponent.
“I’m much quicker than him,” Davis said. “He’s much stronger and much bigger, but we all know that it’s harder for taller fighters to fight a shorter one. He’s decent and he’s gonna hold up for a couple of rounds – but once it gets hot in there, you know how things play out.”
We’ll see how this unfolds. Would some fans rather see Davis fight Shakur Stevenson or rematch Roach? Sure, but will this fight with Paul be bigger? Most definitely, so hate it or love it, but financially, this exhibition fight makes the most sense for Davis and Paul.
