The New York Jets (0-2) will be without their starting quarterback, Justin Fields (concussion), on Sunday when they travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers (2-0).
Currently, Fields, who completed only 3 of 11 passes for 27 yards in the team’s 30-10 loss to the Bills last Sunday and was injured in the fourth quarter of that game, is in concussion protocol.
Without Fields, Aaron Glenn and the Jets will turn to veteran backup Tyrod Taylor.
Last season, the 36-year-old Taylor played in two games for the Jets, and he will make his first start since 2023, when he was with the Giants.
Glenn says there’s no better player to have in this spot than Taylor.
“I have competed against him a number of times,” Glenn said on Wednesday. “There’s an element within him that we also have in Justin that I like a lot. And the fact that he’s been in this League for a long time, there’s no coverage, there’s no pressure that he hasn’t seen. So, that’s why I have confidence in him, and he’s a very studious person, a good athlete, again, been around this League for a long time. There’s no better player that you would want as your backup quarterback than him at this point in time.”
Taylor, who is well-liked in the Jets’ locker room, is also confident in himself, and the 15-year veteran is happy to have the support of his coach and teammates.
“Obviously, I have all the confidence in myself, but to know that the guys in the locker room have the same belief, it’s just about us going out there and executing,” Taylor said. “No one in this locker room lacks confidence; we all believe in one another, and I appreciate their support, but I’m the biggest supporter of them. So, just looking forward to going out and competing on Sunday.”
It’s early in the season, but dropping to 0-3 would be tough to overcome for the Jets. In Week 1, the offense looked dynamic against the Steelers. Week 2 was a different. Hopefully, Taylor can reignite the offense against the Buccaneers.
