For the third time in his career, Terence Crawford is an undisputed champion in the four-belt era. In his debut at 168 pounds, Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday in front of a crowd of 70,482 to become an undisputed champion in the super-middleweight division.
With the win, Crawford became the first three-division undisputed champion in the four-belt era.
One judge scored the fight 116-112, and two other judges scored the fight 115-113.
The 37-year-old Crawford(42-0, 31 KOs) used his beautiful southpaw jab and great movement to keep Alvarez(63-3-2, 39 KOs) off and landed some decent combinations.
According to CompuBox, Crawford threw and landed more punches(115/534) than Alvarez(99/338), and Crawford landed more jabs(45-16). However, Canelo landed more power punches (83-70), which kept him in the fight.
After ten rounds, the fight was even on two cards (95-95), and Crawford had the edge on the other (96-94); however, he was able to sweep the championship rounds, which helped him secure the win.
Crawford’s journey is a testament to his determination and skill. He began his career at 135 pounds, then moved up to 140, where he became the undisputed champion in 2017. His relentless pursuit of excellence led him to 147, where he once again claimed the undisputed title. And now, he’s made history by becoming an undisputed champion for the third time in his debut at 168 pounds.
Regarding the 35-year-old Alvarez, he remains the biggest name in boxing, so there’s more money to be made for him as well. Alvarez’s legacy does take a little bit of a hit after this loss, but he’s lost to two all-time greats in Crawford and Floyd Mayweather, so maybe it’s not all that bad.
As Crawford’s career winds down, there‘s a sense of anticipation for what the future holds. At 38, he’s proven himself time and again, beating everyone he was supposed to beat. But if he desires, there’s still more to achieve and more money to be made. Regardless of what lies ahead, Crawford’s legacy is secure. He’s an all-time great, and the best fighter of this era.
