Eagles’ Metchie III: ‘Just trying to keep the main thing the main thing’

Recently acquired wide receiver John Metchie III made his Eagles’ debut on Friday night in the team’s preseason finale against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

The third-year receiver, who was acquired by the Eagles last week from the Houston Texans, finished Friday’s game with one catch for 14 yards.

Metchie, a beacon of resilience, overcame Leukemia while in Houston. Now, he is immersing himself in the Eagles’ world, just like his quarterback, Jalen Hurts, both keeping the main thing the main thing.

“It’s been good,” he said after the win over the Jets. “It’s just keeping the main thing the main thing, which is football. Acclimating to a new team, football stays the same you got to get ready to go compete. I already know a bunch of guys on the team, so that part is pretty helpful and seamless. It’s not like a huge change of environment. I went to high school in the area, so it’s not a shock there. Just trying to keep the main thing the main thing, take it one day at a time and try to get repetitions.”

At this stage, the 24-year-old Metchie, who the Texans selected in the second round in 2022, is eagerly looking forward to mastering the playbook. His goal is to be able to play freely and make plays.

“Yeah, once I really get the playbook down,” he said. “That way, you’re not thinking. That way you get to actually just go fully play, so looking forward to that.”

With second-year wide receiver Johnny Wilson out for the season, Metchie’s potential role with the Eagles becomes a point of intrigue. Despite the presence of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and Jahan Dotson, Metchie’s versatility could help the Eagles in 2025.
