Eagles’ McCord struggles in preseason finale against Jets

The Eagles and Jets finished their preseason schedule on Friday night at MetLife Stadium, and Philadelphia got the win 19-17.

For the Eagles, rookie quarterback Kyle McCord would play the whole game, and it wasn’t the best of performances. McCord would complete only 15-of-35 passes for 136 yards and an interception.

The sixth-round pick in this year’s draft did lead the Eagles on five scoring drives, but only one led to a touchdown.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni thought it was good to let McCord play the whole game and get much-needed reps.

“You know, wanted to see and have him play,” Sirianni said. “I’ve seen a bunch of teams do that, and we talked about that, with getting him a full game right there. You know, DTR (Dorian Thompson-Robinson) has a lot of tape out there; we’ve seen him play a lot as well. But I just thought we needed a lot of reps there for Kyle for an evaluation process.

Sirianni gave his assessment of what he saw from McCord.

“Obviously, he had some good plays,” Sirianni said. “He had some missed opportunities, so we’ll have to watch the tape. But did some nice things, ran the show well, and played some good situational football that helped us get some points.”

Despite not putting up big numbers, McCord was happy with the experience of playing NFL football.

“It was great learning,” McCord said. “Great experience. I’m excited to go back and watch the film, see the areas I can improve, and see the areas where I did well. I’ll take everything into context, just put my head down and keep getting better.”

Unfortunately, the Eagles might be without their backup quarterback, Tanner McKee, for some time due to a finger injury.

When asked about the possibility of McCord having to be the backup, Sirianni said the following.

“Yeah, I think, again, like I said, Kyle has done some good things,” he said. “And I thought he did some good things, played smart, situational football today. And yeah, I mean, I feel good about this roster as a whole and where we are right now and at all positions.”

McCord is clearly not ready to step in if something were to happen to Jalen Hurts, but no one expected him to be ready. If McKee is not ready, the Eagles would have to make a move at quarterback as they get ready for the Cowboys in the season-opener at Lincoln Financial Field.
