Eagles’ Fangio on Jackson: ‘It’s time to show who he is or who he isn’t’

With the departure of Darius Slay, a key player in the Eagles’ defense, in the offseason, Philadelphia had a significant void at corner.

At this point, the two players competing to fill that void are veteran Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo.

The 29-year-old Jackson signed with the Eagles this offseason after spending four seasons with the New York Giants.

Last season, Jackson appeared in 14 games(started five), and he recorded 28 tackles and five passes defended.

On Tuesday, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio discussed how the eight-year veteran has performed at training camp.

“The first few days out here, he was kind of like he didn’t know he was out there,” Fangio said. “The ball wasn’t going his way at all, and then yesterday, he had a couple balls thrown his way and he did very well. He had a very good day yesterday. It’s too early to say what his experience is or isn’t right now. He’s played a good bit of ball, but I think this is the place where he’s got to show who he is and be the player hopefully that people have always thought he could be.”

Fangio says he is familiar with what Jackson brings to the table, but admitted that he had not watched much of Jackson’s film from a year ago.

“I didn’t watch a whole lot of tape on him,” Fangio said. “Howie [Roseman] wanted to sign him, and [Jokingly.] when Howie wants to sign somebody, it doesn’t matter what I say. So we just took him in. I didn’t really watch a lot of his tape last year, but I’ve seen him play over the years. Saw him when he was coming out of college.”

After four seasons with the Titans, Jackson signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Giants in 2021, and would sign a one-year deal with New York last offseason. Now, according to Fangio, Jackson has a chance to show the Eagles what he can do.

“I don’t know if I think it’s the place,” Fangio said. “I think it’s time for him to show that. In Tennessee, when it came time to re-sign him after his contract was up, they didn’t. The Giants, his contract was up, they didn’t. It’s time to show who he is or who he isn’t.”

This is a pivotal moment for Jackson. He has the chance to be a starter on a championship-caliber team. To date, he’s been a solid starter in the NFL, but as Fangio emphasizes, he now has to prove his worth to the Eagles.
