The Eagles traded DE Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2026 mid-round draft pick, the team announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Huff, who signed a three-year, $51 million with the Eagles last offseason after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Jets, struggled in 2024. He missed time with a wrist injury. He would return later in the season, but he was deactivated for the Super Bowl.
After having a career-high 10 sacks in 2023, the six-year veteran finished the 2024 season with a disappointing 2.5 sacks in 12 games. It was a tough season for Huff, and his performance didn’t meet the expectations set by his previous success.
The Eagles began their OTAs in Philadelphia this week, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio discussed what he saw out of Huff last season.
“Well, I think the one thing is, he was getting better, and when he hurt his hand, he tried to play with it for a couple weeks,” Fangio said on Tuesday. “It wasn’t going good because he was reluctant to use his hand. Then, when they operated on it, he had to play with a big cast on his hand, which basically rendered his hand useless and then rendered his arm useless because you can’t use your hand. That really had an effect on him.
“We just came out of draft season, and the first thing you see when they put a guy’s name up on the board is his hand size, arm length. Well, he lost all that. While he was out, [OLB] Nolan [Smith] got more snaps, [OLB] Jalyx [Hunt] got more snaps, and things evolve, but I think he’ll do fine in San Francisco.”
Things didn’t work out between Huff and the Eagles. It was one of Howie Roseman’s rare misses in the last few seasons. Sometimes, mistakes happen, but fortunately for the Eagles, Hunt stepped up, Nolan Smith was solid, and the Birds won the Super Bowl.
