In a blockbuster trade, the Memphis Grizzlies dealt guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for wing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, guard Cole Anthony, four unprotected future first-round draft picks, and one future first-round draft pick swap, the teams announced Sunday.
The draft picks conveyed to Memphis include: a first-round draft pick in 2025 (16th overall), a first-round draft pick in 2026 (which includes swap rights from either Phoenix or Washington), a first-round draft pick in 2028, the swap rights to a first-round draft pick in 2029 (top two protected) and a first-round draft pick in 2030.
The 26-year-old Bane averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in 32.0 minutes in 69 games last season. The five-year veteran signed a five-year, $207 million max extension in 2023.
Bane brings the Magic, who are clearly looking to make a move in the East, another guy who can score and stretch the floor. With Boston’s Jayson Tatum expected to miss an extended period, the uncertainty in New York and Cleveland has opened up the East, and perhaps the Magic feel that this move helps them compete for a title.
Regarding the Grizzlies, who add Caldwell-Pope and Anthony, along with a significant amount of draft capital, the moves still keep them relevant in the West. They acquire two decent role players and get a substantial number of picks to work with. Additionally, according to reports, Memphis is not looking to trade stars Ja Morant or Jaren Jackson Jr., so we’ll see what their plan is moving forward.
Last season, the 32-year-old Caldwell-Pope started 77 games and averaged 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists for Orlando. The 12-year veteran is one of four active players to start for multiple different championship teams (LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Jrue Holiday).
The 25-year-old Anthony played 67 games (22 starts) last season and averaged 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 18.4 minutes.
