De Los Santos, Sampson Lewkowicz part ways

On Friday, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz announced that he has parted ways amicably with top lightweight contender Edwin De Los Santos and given him his unconditional release.

Last Saturday, De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) saw his WBO Championship challenge against Keyshawn Davis canceled when Davis weighed in 4.3 lbs. overweight. This unexpected turn of events was a disappointment for all involved.

Lewkowicz emphasizes that his decision to part ways with De Los Santos is not a result of any animosity. He says he holds no ill will towards the 25-year-old and wishes him the best for the rest of his career.

“Edwin is a warrior, and I support him and still consider him a personal friend,” said Lewkowicz of the offensively gifted southpaw. “There is no animosity between us. What happened last week was very unfortunate. I did what I thought was best, but Edwin won’t let his fighting spirit agree, so I gave him his release. I know he will go on to do great things in the ring and become a world champion. I will still be cheering for him to do so, and he can always come to me for advice.”

Based on this statement, it appears that De Los Santos, who reportedly received half of his purse for the canceled fight, wanted to fight Davis. It’s hard to argue with Lewkowicz’s decision; his goal is to keep his fighters safe, but fighters fight, and De Los Santos wanted to fight, so you can understand his perspective as well.
