On Saturday night, Jaron “Boots’ Ennis showed he was the best welterweight in the world when he defeated Eimantas Stanionis by 6th-round TKO at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
With the win, Ennis(34-0, 30 KOs) retains his IBF strap and picks up the WBA and Ring Magazine titles.
The 27-year-old was a force to be reckoned with throughout the fight, displaying his full offensive arsenal. Ennis consistent body shots, hooks, jabs, and uppercuts were beautiful. Despite Stanionis’ attempts, Ennis remained unscathed, his momentum unbroken.
The Philadelphia native started to completely take over the fight in Round 5. According Compubox, Ennis landed 16 power shots in that round, and Stanionis’ face was busted up.
In the sixth round, Ennis went to work on Stanionis’ body, and he would drop him with an uppercut to the head. While Stanionis(15-1, 9 KOs), who fought for the first time in 15 months, got up; he was hurt. He would make it out of the round, but his corner halted the action, and Ennis got the best win of his career.
At this point, it’s hard to imagine a welterweight who can match the prowess of the 27-year-old Ennis. His versatile skills and improved defense make him a formidable opponent. While Ennis’s aggressive style may leave him vulnerable, his chin has held up.
This is Boots’ best win, but it’s not his signature win. We’ll have to wait for that.
According to his promoter, Eddie Hearn, Ennis has exciting plans for the future. He will fight in Philly again in the summer or early fall, and there’s a possibility of a showdown with WBO 147-pound champion Brian Norman. This potential match promises to be a thrilling event that would draw a large audience in Philadelphia. However, Ennis might have some mandatory business to attend to first, or he could even consider moving up to 154.
No matter what happens next for Ennis, this was another successful night at the office.
