Norfolk State women’s head coach Larry Vickers will be leaving the university after accepting the head coaching position at Auburn University.
Vickers spent nine full seasons as the head coach of the NSU women’s basketball team; he replaces Johnnie Harris, who was fired by Auburn this month after four seasons with the university.
During his time at Norfolk State, who went 30-5, including 14-0 in conference play this season, Vickers produced a 177-99 record, including leading the Spartans to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
Ironically, Norfolk State, who lost to Maryland in the first round of the women’s NCAA tournament on Saturday, defeated Auburn 63-57 in December.
The 61-year-old played at Norfolk State and spent eight seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program. He served the last three as the associate head coach.
