One of the most ferocious and hardest-hitting heavyweights in the history of boxing died on Friday.
Two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman has passed away.
He was 76.
The Houston native, who won a Gold Medal in the 1968 Olympics, became a champion in 1973 when he stopped then-world champion Joe Frazier. After two title defenses, Foreman would lose his title when he was stopped by Muhammad Ali in 1974 in the “Rumble in the Jungle.”
Foreman retired from the sport of boxing in 1977.
However, in 1987, and now a Baptist minister, Foreman came back at the age of 38.
In 1994, “It happened!” At the age of 45, he became a world champion again after stopping then-world champion Michael Moorer. He is the oldest world champion in the history of boxing.
“George was a great friend to not only myself but to my entire family,” Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum, who promoted many of Foreman’s fights, said in a statement. “We’ve lost a family member and are absolutely devastated.”
After retiring again, he was known for his grill, “George Foreman Grill,” which was highly successful and made him a lot of money.
He’ll be remembered for his big punches and, more importantly, his big smile.
