Mason: ‘We’re creeping up on those titles’

135-pound prospect Abdullah Mason (17-0, 15 KOs) continues to impress as he dropped Manuel Jaimes (16-3-1, 11 KOs) four times and stopped him at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

Mason dropped Jaimes once in the second, again in the third, and twice in the fourth. Referee David Fields stopped the action at 1:55 in Round 4, and Mason won by TKO.

In his last fight, Jaimes went the distance with former world champion Rolly Romero, but he only lasted four rounds with the aggressive Mason.

Following the win, Mason said he’s no longer a prospect but a contender.

“I said the same thing {about no longer being called a prospect},” he said. “We say the same thing. We want the belts,  world championship.

“I gotta keep doing what I’m doing and making these guys look the way I’ve been doing since I turned pro.”

The 20-year-old says that the fighters who he wants next are the fighters who have belts.

“The more they give me, the more I’ll put out,” he said. “We’re creeping up on those titles. Once we get in position for those titles, that’s who we want.”

Mason has a lot of talent and ability, and you get the sense that he will be a champion one day. However, he is only 20 and did get dropped in his last fight, so while he’s been impressive, he still has more growing to do.

Again, he’ll probably be a champion at some point, but there’s no need to rush it.
