Lakers’ Redick on Bronny: ‘I have confidence in him’

On Tuesday night, the Lakers fell to the 76ers on the road 118-104.

LeBron James led the way for the Lakers with 31 points, but the team struggled, including his son, Bronny James, who played the most extensive minutes of his career.

In 15 minutes of action, James Jr. was 0/5 from the field, including 0/3 from deep, three rebounds, one assist, and three turnovers.

James Jr. entered the game in the first quarter and struggled throughout. Lakers head coach JJ Redick was asked why he went to Bronny when he did.

“Just felt like on a back-to-back, just him giving his energy, I think, was the goal,” Redick said. “I maybe put him in a tough spot, you know, flying up yesterday, nationally televised game, Philly, all that stuff. He didn’t play well, but he’s been playing great in the stay-ready games and he’s been playing great in the G (League). I have confidence in him, but obviously didn’t provide that at a high level.”

To Bronny’s credit, he has played well in the G League, including dropping 30 points in December and recently scoring 31 points for the South Bay Lakers, so he has shown improvement.

However, at this point in his development, the 20-year-old rookie needs to play more in the G League than the NBA, which is okay.
