Eagles lose Hurts, fall to Commanders

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles (12-3) franchise-record 10-game winning streak was snapped as they lost to the Washington Commanders(10-5) 36-33 at Northwest Stadium.

With the win, the Commanders, who lost to the Eagles in Philadelphia in November, prevented the Eagles from clinching the NFC East.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Philly’s ‘Big 3’ and their outstanding performances on Sunday:

-Saquon Barkley had 150 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. He had 109 yards in the first quarter, including a 68-yard touchdown run. To Washington’s credit, they held Barkley to 41 yards over the final three quarters. At this point, Barkley is 268 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record.

-Darius Slay was solid on Sunday. He had seven tackles, five passes defensed, one which led to an interception by Reed Blankenship in the fourth.

-A.J. Brown went over 1,000 yards for the third straight season, an Eagles record. He finished Sunday’s game with eight catches for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Honorable Mention:

-LB Nolan Smith had a sack and two fumble recoveries. Smith is second on the team with 6.5 sacks this season.

End of the Day:

The Eagles should have won this game, but considering that they lost Jalen Hurts(concussion) in the first quarter, a loss is understandable. However, you should win when your defense forces five turnovers, like the Eagles’ defense did on Sunday.

Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett(14/24, 143 yards, TD, INT) was not great but solid. If DeVonta Smith makes that catch late in the fourth, the Eagles would have probably won this game.

Back to Philly’s defense, they played good enough to win; they created five turnovers, but the defense also played bad enough to lose; they allowed 22-fourth quarter points. Not having C.J. Gardner Johnson, who was ejected in third quarter after a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, didn’t help.

With this loss, the Eagles are pretty much locked into the second seed, which guarantees them at least one playoff game and possibly two if they win in the wild-card round. If the season ended today, the Eagles would face the Commanders in the playoffs, so after today’s game, the Eagles should feel good about that matchup.

Regarding Hurts, it should be interesting to see if he’ll be ready to go next week. We’ve seen Reed Blankenship recently miss a game with a concussion, so Hurts could miss a game. Pickett injured his ribs on Sunday, so we’ll see if he will be available against Dallas.

What’s Next:

The Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday.

One more thing…

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is special, and he was special on Sunday. He was 24/39 for 268 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, including the game-winner with six seconds to go. Daniels also added 81 rushing yards.
