Surace: ‘Middleweight is my true weight class’

Coming into his fight with Bruno Surace, former world champion Jaime Munguia said he was looking for a knockout. However, while he was looking for the knockout, the unexpected happened.

The Frenchman went on the road and knocked out Munguia with a right hand in the sixth round of the super middleweight main event Saturday evening at Estadio Caliente in Munguia’s hometown of Tijuana, Mexico.

“I know that he is an excellent boxer. So, we worked on our counter punches,” Surace said. “He is a true warrior. I want to thank him for the opportunity. This was a big experience for me.”

Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) got out the gate quickly after knocking down the 26-year-old Surace with a counter left hook to the chin in Round 2. However, Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) survived the round.

In the sixth, Munguia offered Surace the more inviting target, leaning back with his hands down, and Surace delivered a homerun right hand that got the job done. Munguia tried to get up, but it wasn’t happening, and the upset was complete.

Interestingly enough, Surace says he’s really a 160-pound fighter and is still determining if there will be a rematch.

“Middleweight is my true weight class. But we’ll see if {a rematch} can happen.” Surace said.

This was a bad loss for Munguia against a guy who is not a big puncher. Saturday night was supposed to be a showcase for the Munguia, but it turned out to be a disappointing homecoming.

He’ll have to rebuild himself after this loss; however, he has a following and makes exciting fights, so IF he wants it, Munguia will definitely get significant fights moving forward.
