Carrington on win over Segawa: ‘This is just gonna get me to the next level’

Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington’s education continued on Friday night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. He had a hard test, and fortunately for him, he passed it, but it was close.

Brooklyn-born featherweight earned a hard-fought 10-round majority decision over Ugandan contender Sulaiman Segawa by scores of 95-95 and 97-93(2x).

According to CompuBox, Segawa threw more punches(416-358) and outlanded Carrington(108-91). In addition, Segawa landed more power punches(74-63).

This was a back-and-forth affair, and the veteran Segawa (17-5-1, 6 KOs), who is coming off an upset win over Ruben Villa, seemed to get the better of the action, but to Carrington’s (13-0, 8 KOs) credit, he outlanded Segawa in the final round, and won that round on all three scorecards.

The 27-year-old Carrington believes this fight will help him a lot going forward.

“I owe him a lot {for that education tonight},” he said. “This is just gonna get me to the next level. I just learned to deal with the off-tempo. I got a couple of things I gotta work on back in the gym. We gotta get back on our beat and have more dominant performances. But as long as we got the ‘W’ at the end of the day, we’re still good.”

You could argue that Carrington lost on Friday night, but again, he got the nod.

Before this fight, some were talking about Carrington going against undisputed 122-pound champion Naoya Inoue, but after this fight, it’s clear, Carrington, who is ultra-talented, needs a little more seasoning before he takes on that challenge.
