Giants’ Eric Gray has strong performance in preseason opener

With Saquon Barkley off to the Eagles, the Giants signed former Houston Texans running back Devin Singletary to carry the load in 2024, and after we saw last night, he might have some help with second-year running back Eric Gray.

In the Giants’ 14-3 win over the Lions in their preseason opener at MetLife Stadium, Gray had four carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns, including a 48-yard yard touchdown run in the second quarter. In addition, the fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft had four receptions for 46 yards.

This was a breakout performance for Gray and one that could help his cause going forward.

“I just wanted to put my best foot forward, he said. “Like I said, I just want to be Eric Gray; just be me. Last year, I kind of made football more than it is. It’s just football at the end of the day. Just being me.”

Last season, the 24-year-old Gray missed time with a calf injury. He mainly contributed on punt and kickoff returns, but he struggled with fumbles at times. As he enters his second season, Gray discussed what he learned from the 2023 season.

“That football is the same game I have been playing since I was four years old,” he said. “I have been playing since I was four years old,” he said about football. “There is no difference. When you’re young, people try to hype up that the NFL is a different league, but it’s the exact same game that I’ve been playing since I was four.”

Giants head coach Brian Daboll added on Gray:

“I think everybody has more confidence when you go through a season as a rookie, Expectations, all the things that go along with it—knowing the offense. It was good to see him make a few plays out there tonight. But let’s start with the offensive line. Creating holes. He had some good runs in open space. A couple good plays on screen plays.”

The Giants get back at it next Saturday when they travel to Houston to battle the Texans.
