Davis to Martin: ‘I’m gonna break you up’

Tank-Martin Final Press Conference

One of the faces of boxing returns on Saturday night.

After a tumultuous year, WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) will battle unbeaten top contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) in the 100th championship fight night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas(PBC PPV on Prime Video).

The 29-year-old Davis last fought in April 2022 when he stopped Ryan Garcia, and during his time away, he spent some time in jail, but all that is behind him, and now the focus is on Martin.

“Don’t get your popcorn, or your juice, stay locked in,” Davis said. “Because I’ve been locked in for a long time now, and my give back is gonna be a great performance on Saturday night.

“He’s shaking up there. He was talking tough yesterday when it was just him. It’s gonna show. He’s a frontrunner.”

Davis believes the undefeated Martin is not coming to win but to survive.

“It hasn’t even hit him yet,” Davis said. “He’ll see Saturday. It’s gonna hit him, especially when I touch him. What is he bringing to the table that I haven’t seen?

“He’s just worried about not getting knocked out. He’s not worrying about winning. He’s trying not to get knocked out.”

Martin, 29, thinks Davis has not seen anything like him and expects a knockout.

“June 15, it’s going down,” Martin said. “We’re here. Like I’ve said before, I appreciate ‘Tank’ giving me the opportunity to whoop his ass. He just hasn’t been in there with anybody like me.

“This can go down however he wants it to go down. If he acts up, like I’ve been saying, you’re gonna see Gervonta Davis get knocked out. If he acts up, he’s getting knocked out, period. If he acts crazy, he’s going to sleep.”

Davis expects to bludgeon Martin.

“I’m gonna break you up,” Davis said. “I’m gonna split all that up under your eyes. Every time I tell people something is gonna happen, what happens?”

We’ll never see Martin at this level; this is a huge step up. However, Davis has been through a lot in recent months, but he seems to know how to weather the storm. Outside of Ryan Garcia, who appeared to be weight-drained, Martin could possibly be Davis’ toughest opponent.

Davis is at the height of his career, and it’s hard to think he will lose.

Prediction: Davis wins by 8th-round TKO.
