On Friday, boxing got some bad news when Top Rank Boxing announced that the highly anticipated undisputed light heavyweight world title showdown between WBC/IBF/WBO champion Artur Beterbiev and WBA ruler Dmitry Bivol — scheduled for Saturday, June 1 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — has been postponed after Beterbiev suffered a ruptured meniscus in training.
The plan is to reschedule Beterbiev-Bivol before the end of the year.
According to Mike Coppinger, Bivol is slated to remain on the June 1 show in Riyadh against a replacement opponent.
The 39-year-old Beterbiev has had his share of injuries over the years, and depending on the severity of his meniscus injury, you wonder how long he’ll be on the shelf.
However, Beterbiev is confident that the fight will still happen. He said the following on X:
“Unfortunately, injuries in professional sports are not uncommon, and they can hurt everybody,” Beterbiev said. “I sincerely did not want the upcoming fight to be postponed, but the doctors insisted on it. This fight will definitely take place, but a little later. Thank you all for your support.”
