Usually, when an MMA fighter leaves the Octagon and heads over to the boxing ring, it does not turn out very well. However, MMA legend Anderson Silva is a different beast.
The 46-year-old Silva(2-1, 1 KOs) came over to boxing and won an eight-round split decision over former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.(52-6-1) on Saturday night at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The scores read 77-75 twice for Silva and 77-75 Chavez, but Silva was the clear winner and in complete control throughout the fight. At times, Silva was taunting Chavez Jr in this fight and seemed to frustrate Junior.
Who knows how seriously the 35-year-old Chavez took this fight, as he weighed in 2.4 pounds over the contracted weight of 182, which caused him to forfeit $100,000. This was a fight he should have won, and according to Chavez, this fight was a draw.
“I did good,” Chavez said after the fight. “just had some problems breathing, plus my ribs were kind of hurt; the cut didn’t affect me at all. I thought it could have been a draw.”
Even though Chavez thought it should have been a draw, Silva thought he won every round.
“We won every round,” Silva said. “This has been a dream of mine for many years. I did this because I have the best team. My team is my family. We did this together. Lots of hard work to get to this point. Absolutely will do this again.”
After this win, Silva has options, and maybe he’ll give Chavez a rematch, or perhaps he’ll fight another fighter between the light-heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions; who knows. However, what Silva did on Saturday night was very impressive!
