While Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has put up better numbers in previous games this season, last night’s performance may have been the best of his young career.
Late in the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs trailing 23-20, and having to go down the field against a tough Broncos defense, and a very hostile Mile High crowd. Mahomes was able to lead the Chiefs down the field to set up the go-ahead rushing touchdown by Kareem Hunt as the Chiefs were able to overcome a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Broncos 27-23 to start the season 4-0.
On that final drive, Mahomes did it all. The right-handed QB threw a left-handed pass to Tyreek Hill for a first down, and he escaped pressure to throw a 35-yard strike to Demetrius Harris.
Mahomes would finish the game 28/45, 304 yards, 2 TDs(1 pass, 1 rush).
Many are gushing at what they saw last night, including former Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil.
“I think his overall ability to throw the ball in any body position is the best I’ve ever seen,” Vermeil told TMZ Sports. “He defies all the odds: well, don’t throw across your body, don’t throw leaping in the air, don’t throw leaping turning backwards, don’t throw with your left hand; he defies them all.
“The thing is a lot of people can do that and throw the ball, but not accurately. He still throws the ball accurately enough for the guy to make the catch. Sometimes he has to dive and get it, but he makes the play.”
Throughout his head coaching career, Andy Reid has coached some talented quarterbacks like Donovan McNabb, Alex Smith, and Michael Vick, and as an assistant in Green Bay, Reid coached Hall of Famer Brett Favre, but according to Vermeil, Mahomes has more talent than all of those guys.
“Playing with Andy Reid, you just stop and think; all his quarterbacks are good players,” Vermeil said. “They’re all good players, All-Pros, good players, set records. This guy has more athletic talent than any of them.”
Mahomes, 23, is a very talented player, and he is off to a great start. If he continues to play at this level, he could very well be the best quarterback that Reid has ever coached.
We shall see…
