Why Golovkin should fight Chavez Jr. on May 5

On Tuesday, at a press conference in Los Angeles, Canelo Alvarez announced that he was withdrawing from his fight against Gennady Golovkin on May 5 in Las Vegas.

With the Nevada State Athletic Commission decision to file a complaint against Alvarez, after Canelo tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol in February, the fight was basically dead.

If all goes well, Alvarez could receive a six-month suspension and return in September, and at that time, he could fight Golovkin on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Gennady Golovkin still plans to fight on May 5.

“I am looking forward to returning to Las Vegas for my 20th title defense and headlining my first Cinco De Mayo event on May 5,” Golovkin said.

We have heard a few possible names to replace Canelo. Guys like Demetrius Andrade, Spike O’Sullivan, but the one name that makes the most sense to replace Canelo is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Chavez Jr does a few things. First, it’s Cinco de Mayo weekend, so Chavez Jr.(50-3-1, 32 KOs)  helps keep the Mexican fan base in play. Say what you want about Chavez Jr, but he is a reasonably popular fighter. The last time we saw Chavez Jr was last Cinco de Mayo weekend in Vegas against Canelo. That fight was a pay-per-view success as it did over one million buys. The Chavez name helped make that possible.

Another reason Chavez Jr. is the perfect replacement is he not much of a risk. In his last fight against Canelo, Chavez Jr. was pretty much a punching bag. Therefore, Golovkin would have no problem beating him, which will allow Golovkin to get an easy win and be ready to face Canelo in September.

Chavez Jr. has been on record as saying he is interested in Golovkin on May 5, but he would prefer the fight to be at 168.

Not sure where Golovkin’s weight is at this point, but he’s probably not too far away from 168.

Obviously, there are some risks with Chavez Jr. because he has not always been discipline with his weight. However, if you want to keep the Mexican fans involved, and have some success at the box office, Chavez Jr. is your man.
