Ben Simmons selected to his first NBA All-Star game

The NBA announced today that Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers was named an Eastern Conference reserve for the 2019 All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s Simmons’ first career All-Star selection as he becomes the 32nd 76er to be named to an All-Star Game in franchise history.

Simmons will join teammate Joel Embiid as an Eastern Conference All-Star this season. The two become the first pair of 76er teammates selected to an All-Star Game since Hall of Famers Allen Iverson and Dikembe Mutombo were both selected in 2002.

This season, Simmons is averaging 16.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game while shooting .569 percent from the field. He ranks third in the NBA in assists per game and 13th in field-goal percentage, making him the only player in the league to rank in the top 15 in both categories.

The Australia native has recorded eight triple-doubles this season, good for first in the Eastern Conference and tied with Denver’s Nikola Jokić for second in the NBA behind only Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook. Simmons recently notched his 20th career triple-double in his 129th NBA game; the only player ever to reach the mark faster is Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson, who did so in just 45 appearances.

Last week on Jan. 23, Simmons posted 21 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high-tying 15 assists in a 122-120 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Just 12 days prior, he tallied 23 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists against the Atlanta Hawks. Simmons is one of four players with multiple games of at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists, joining All-Stars Bradley Beal (two), James Harden (two) and Westbrook (four).

The Louisiana State product holds career averages of 16.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game and was named the 2017-18 Kia Rookie of the Year last season.

The Eastern and Western Conference reserves for the 68th NBA All-Star Game were revealed tonight on TNT. Eastern Conference captain Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks and Western Conference captain LeBron James of the Lakers will pick the final teams for the 2019 All-Star Game on TNT in a special NBA All-Star Draft Show on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. ET. The captains will draft the eight remaining players from the starter pool in the First Round and then all 14 players from the reserve pool in the Second Round, making selections without regard to a player’s conference affiliation or position.

The 2019 NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. ET at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. TNT and ESPN Radio will air the game live in the United States. NBA All-Star 2019 will reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages.

The 14 reserves were chosen by the NBA’s 30 head coaches. The coaches voted for seven players in their respective conferences – two guards, three front court players and two additional players at either position group. They were not permitted to vote for players from their own team.

Ben Simmons named to Mountain Dew Ice Rising Stars

The NBA announced today that Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons has been selected as a participant for MTN DEW ICE Rising Stars during NBA All-Star 2019. The game will be played on Friday, Feb. 15 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on TNT and ESPN Radio.

This is the sixth straight season in which the 76ers have had at least one player named to the event.

Simmons (Australia) will represent the World Team for the second consecutive season. This season, he is averaging 16.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game while shooting .581 percent from the field. He leads all first and second-year players in assists per game, while ranking third in both rebounds per game and field-goal percentage.

The Australia native has recorded eight triple-doubles this season, good for first in the Eastern Conference and second in the NBA behind only Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook. Simmons recently notched his 20th career triple-double in his 129th NBA game; the only player ever to reach the mark faster is Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson, who did so in just 45 appearances.

During the week of Jan. 7-13, Simmons held averages of 18.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 10.3 assists per game. He is the only player in the Eastern Conference to average a triple-double over a single week this season.

The Louisiana State product holds career averages of 16.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game and was named the 2017-18 Kia Rookie of the Year last season.

The 25th Rising Stars will pit 10 first- and second-year NBA players from the United States against 10 first- and second-year NBA players from around the world in the league’s annual showcase of premier young talent during NBA All-Star.  MTN DEW ICE will serve as the title partner, expanding on its continued commitment to supporting up-and-coming stars throughout the sport.

Boston’s Kyrie Irving (U.S. Team) and Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki (World Team) will serve as honorary coaches in MTN DEW ICE Rising Stars.  The official Rising Stars head coaches will be an assistant coach from each 2019 NBA All-Star Game coaching staff.  The All-Star Game coaching staffs are determined by the best record in each conference through games played on Sunday, Feb. 3.

NBA assistant coaches selected the MTN DEW ICE Rising Stars rosters, with each of the league’s 30 teams submitting one ballot per coaching staff. A ballot consisted of four front-court players, four guards and two additional players at either position group for each team.  Voters also had to choose a minimum of three first-year NBA players and three second-year NBA players for each team.  Coaches were not permitted to vote for any player on their team.

76ers GM Brand: ‘In Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, we have two of the NBA’s top 20 players’

Happy times in Philadelphia as the 76ers acquired All-Star Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton from Minnesota in exchange for Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Jerryd Bayless, and a 2022 second-round pick.

With the move, the 76ers have put themselves in position to contend for an NBA title this year and beyond.

76ers GM Elton Brand believes adding Butler to what they have with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons gives Philadelphia a legitimate chance against the top teams in the NBA:

“We have a championship window that’s centered around the continued progression of our talented young core, as well as our ability to add elite players who elevate our program,” Brand said. “In Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, we have two of the NBA’s top 20 players. Now, we’ve added a third top-20 player in Jimmy Butler, who is one of the NBA’s very best on both ends of the floor. This move further strengthens our pursuit of a championship and gives us a formidable combination to take on the league’s top teams.”

Butler, who has been selected an NBA All-Star in each of the past four seasons, has appeared in 10 games (all starts) this season with Minnesota, averaging 21.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.4 steals (third in the NBA) in 36.1 minutes per game.

Regarding Simmons and Embiid being top 20 players in the NBA, Embiid is a top 20 player. He is an early season MVP candidate averaging 27.7 ppg and 13.9 rpg. At times, he has been unstoppable. Embiid has two 40-pont games in this young season

Concerning Simmons, he has top 20 ability, but I don’t think he is a top 20 player just yet. However, if the 2017 Rookie of the Year can develop a jump shot or something close to it, he will be a legit top 20 player as well.

No matter how you view Embiid and Simmons, it is safe to say that the 76ers have two young players that could be superstars for years to come.

76ers’ Brown: ‘I am proud of the fact that 2 of the past 5 ROY have come from our program’s development efforts’

Ben Simmons had a great rookie season for the Philadelphia 76ers, and that great season was recognized last night at the NBA Awards as he was named the 2017-18 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year.

Simmons appeared in 81 games averaging 15.8 points in 33.7 minutes per game, while his averages of 8.1 rebounds, 8.2 assists and 1.7 steals per contest led all rookies.

Two of the last five Rookies of the Year have come from the 76ers(Michael Carter-Williams ROY 2013-14). A fact that makes 76ers head coach Brett Brown very proud.

“I am proud of the fact that two of the past five Rookies of the Year have come from our program’s development efforts, which are the bloodline of our culture,” Brown said.

“Ben Simmons is so much an example of this fact. He had been a college four-man and transitioned into the NBA as a point guard; that, in itself, is an amazing story. This positional change and added responsibility only confirms how exciting his future is as a multi-dimensional player. His character and his talents will be a building block of our championship quest for many, many years. I am so proud to share in his award and so proud of his teammates for also helping him achieve this recognition.”

While the team has struggled over the years in terms of winning basketball games, the 76ers have done a decent job of developing talent. Players like Robert Covington and T.J. McConnell have developed into solid players under Brown.

After winning 52 games last season, and winning their first-round series against the Heat, the 76ers are in a good place right now, but it’s time for this team to take that next step. Simmons and Markelle Fultz need to improve from the perimeter, while Joel Embiid needs to improve in the post.

The 76ers will take that next step with proper player development, which history shows is a strength for this team.

Ex-NBA player Mo Evans on who should be ROY: ‘I would go with Donovan Mitchell just because he’s a true rookie’

Rookies Donovan Mitchell of the Jazz and Ben Simmons of the 76ers have helped lead their teams to the second-round of the playoffs. Both teams would not be in that position without those two guys.

Mitchell had 38 points in the Jazz close out game against the Thunder, while Simmons became the first rookie since Magic Johnson to record a triple-double in the playoffs as the 76ers beat the Heat in 5.

The big question with Mitchell and Simmons is who should be Rookie of the Year. Simmons is a marvel with the ball and affects the game in so many different ways. He leads all rookies in rebounds and assists; also, Simmons was third amongst rookies in points.

Regarding Mitchell, he leads all rookies in points and set the rookie record for 3-pointers made.

Both could easily be Rookie of the Year, but former NBA player Mo Evans is going with Mitchell:

“It’s really a tough call because both guys, as you said, deserve it, and I think to Donovan Mitchell’s credit, he’s a true rookie, and he’s had a stellar year,” Evans told the Go4it podcast. “He’s impacted his team greatly, and I love how he plays with such aggressiveness and super talented. And then with Ben Simmons, he’s really turned the corner significantly after coming back from injury, and barely playing last year, not getting to play at all. And coming back from injury, Philly would not be who they are without him as well. I would go with Donovan Mitchell just because he’s a true rookie.”

Evans believed Simmons had an advantage over Mitchell coming into this season. Here’s why:

He’s(Simmons) been able to sit back watch and be around the game at this level for an additional season, and that’s a long time,” Evans said. “You learn about basketball being around these great players, and that’s why his comfort level is so much greater than a “rookie” player, but I think that you can’t go wrong with either one of those guy winning that award.”

I think you can’t wrong with Mitchell or Simmons. We might get a repeat of the 1994-95 season when Grant Hill and Jason Kidd shared the award, but if it were up to me, I’m going with Simmons because of the multiple ways he can impact the game.

Utah Jazz star rookie Donovan Mitchell is having a tremendous season. Mitchell is averaging 20.5 ppg, 3.7 apg, and 3.7 rpg in 77 games with Jazz.

However, 76ers rookie phenom Ben Simmons is having a tremendous rookie season as well. Simmons is averaging 16.1 ppg, 8.2 apg, and 8.1 rpg in 79 games with the 76ers.

While this is Simmons second season in the NBA, he is considered a rookie because he did not play a game last season for the 76ers.

The big debate around the NBA is who should win the 2018 Rookie of the Year award?

Simmons is on the record in saying that he believes he should be the Rookie of the Year, while others, like Draymond Green, think Mitchell should win the award.

Tonight, before the Jazz-Warriors game. Mitchell wore a unique hoodie to the game.

Take a look:

Should be interesting to see who gets the award!

Ben Simmons: ‘I believe I can be one of the best players in the league’

Philadelphia 76ers G Ben Simmons is having a tremendous rookie season. Simmons leads all rookies in rebounds, assists, and triple-doubles(6).

Simmons, along with All-Star C Joel Embiid, could be a formidable duo for years to come.

Simmons, who was a guest on ESPN’s First Take today, feels like he could eventually be one of the best players in the NBA.

Take a listen:

The future is bright for Simmons. If he can improve his jump shot, he is going to be even harder to guard, and possibly could be one the best players in the game.

I guess we will have to wait and see!

Kevin Durant mocks 76ers’ “FEDS” nickname(VIDEO)

Things are looking up for the Philadelphia 76ers! The days of “tanking” are over, and now it’s time for the harvest. After drafting Washington’s Markelle Fultz with the number one overall pick on Thursday, 76ers C Joel Embiid went to Twitter to announce the new nickname for 4 members of the team. They came up with “FEDS,” which stands for (Markelle) Fultz, (Joel) Embiid, Dario (Saric), and (Ben) Simmons.

Warriors star Kevin Durant gave his take on the nickname “FEDS”

KD probably has a point!

You agree with KD?

No Ben Simmons this year!

The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Friday that rookie Ben Simmons is out for the year. According to the 76ers, Simmons foot is not completely healed.

I guess he is on the Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid plan (both players did not play as rookies).

I guess the good news for Simmons is he is still eligible to win Rookie of the Year next season.

Do Philly fans still #TrustTheProcess?
