On June 1, the day everyone in the NFL was waiting for, especially the Patriots and Eagles, the Philadelphia Eagles finally traded wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick.
The Eagles waited until June 1 to lessen the cap hit.
Brown, 29, spent four seasons in Philadelphia after being traded to the Eagles from the Titans in 2022 for a first and third rounder.
In those four seasons in Philadelphia, Brown, who had four straight one-thousand-yard receiving seasons, was a dominant force. His dominance helped the Eagles reach two Super Bowls and win the championship in 2024.
Brown and Jalen Hurts put up numbers together, and as Hurts pointed out last week at his media availability, “Nothing can replace all of the greatness that we achieved together.”
However, the relationship between Brown and Hurts deteriorated. Brown told Maria Taylor in a recent interview that the two close friends drifted apart. Why? Brown said there’s no one specific reason or incident.
All good things must come to an end, and Brown, who wanted out, needed to be traded.
Obviously, the Eagles may not be as good on offense without Brown, but it could be an example of addition by subtraction. They still have DeVonta Smith; they added Elijah Moore and Hollywood Brown in free agency, traded for Dontayvion Wicks, and drafted Makai Lemon, so the Eagles have remade their wide receiver room, and it’s still solid.
In addition, the Eagles and Howie Roseman were able to get decent draft capital for the eight-year veteran.
Maybe the grass will be greener for Brown in New England with Drake Maye and his former head coach in Tennessee, Mike Vrabel, or maybe he’ll regret leaving Philly, who knows, but it’s clear that Brown and Philly were not perfect together at this point, at this moment, and at this time.
