After losing to the San Francisco 49ers 23-19 in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs on Sunday, many knew that change would probably be coming.
On Wednesday, the Eagles announced that first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo has been relieved of his duties.
“I have decided to make a change at offensive coordinator,” head coach Nick Sirianni wrote in a statement. “I met with Kevin today to discuss the difficult decision, as he is a great coach who has my utmost respect. He has been integral to this team’s success over the last five years, not only to the on-field product but behind the scenes as a valued leader for our players and organization. I have no doubt he will continue to have a successful coaching career.
“Ultimately, when we fall short of our goals, that responsibility lies on my shoulders.”
The 44-year-old Patullo, who joined the team in 2021 as the passing game coordinator and was promoted to offensive coordinator after Kellen Moore took the head coaching job with the Saints in the offseason, could have another role with the team, according to reports.
This season, the Eagles struggled mightily on offense. They’ve been inconsistent from the beginning to the end of the season. At no point did this team find a rhythm on offense.
Plus, no team in the NFL spent as much money as the Eagles did on the offensive side of the ball, so for this team be mediocre on offense is unexcusable.
Last season, the Eagles’ offense was more talented upfront. There was some drop off from the inside of the line. Cam Jurgens, Landon Dickerson, and Tyler Steen struggled at times this season, and quarterback Jalen Hurts, who did throw a career-high 25 touchdown passes, wasn’t always at his best, and now for the seventh time in his career, he will have a new offensive coordinator.
Again, an offense that has A.J. Brown, Dallas Goedert, DeVonta Smith, and Saquon Barkley should be better.
Is it all Patullo’s fault? Probably not, but somebody has to take the fall when a team underachieves, and that coach is Kevin Patullo.
