Clippers’ Leonard named Western Conference Player of the Week

On Monday, the NBA announced that LA Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard has been named Western Conference Player of Week for games played from Monday, December 22, through Sunday, December 28.

This is Leonard’s 11th Player of the Week Award, and his fifth time winning with the Clippers.

During the week, the 34-year-old Leonard led the Clippers to a perfect 3-0 record, behind averages of 41.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.7 steals, while shooting 58.0% (40-69) from the field, 50% (11-22) from three-point range and 97.1% (33-34) from the free-throw line. Leonard led the NBA in points per game last week and ranked second in plus/minus. The Clippers won their three games by a combined 49 points, the largest point differential in the NBA during that span.

On Sunday, December 28 against Detroit, Leonard led the Clippers to a 112-99 win with a career-high 55 points (17-26 FG, 5-10 3PT, 16-17 FT) along with 11 rebounds, five steals and three blocks. He became the first player in NBA history to record at least 55 points, five steals and three blocks in a game, and his 55 points matched the franchise record for most points in a game.

In his 14th NBA season, the six-time All-NBA player is averaging 27.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.1 steals, while shooting 49.5% from the field, 37.5% from three-point range and a league-leading 97.6% from the free-throw line.

The Clippers(10-21), who have now won a season-high four straight games, the longest active winning streak in the NBA, return to action on Tuesday night when they host the Sacramento Kings.
