After winning his first career start last Sunday against the Raiders, Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders made his home debut on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
Unfortunately, for Sanders and the Browns, the team would lose to the 49ers 26-8.
The fifth-round pick in this year’s draft completed 16-of-25 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.
He had some moments, including a 34-yard touchdown pass to Harold Fannin Jr., but he also missed an open Jerry Jeudy in the first quarter and took a bad sack in the second quarter, which took the Browns out of field goal range.
Overall, Sanders says he didn’t play his best on Sunday.
“By wins and losses. Obviously, we lost, so I ain’t play well,” Sanders said. “There’s definitely things on film Imma look back and want to get back and want to see. But at least moving forward, I know what we could do differently going about the week and being able to get fully prepared for every possibility.”
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, who said Sanders will start next week against the Titans, gave his thoughts on Sanders’ performance.
“Yeah, I’d have to look at it,” he said. “Obviously, he’s battling like all of our guys are battling. I know there’s plays he wants back, but we’ll look at it, we’ll correct it.”
Sanders is excited to keep the job, and he says he’ll be ready.
“Yeah, of course I’m thankful. Like, in the midst of everything that’s going on – wins, lost, anything. I remember when I wasn’t playing, so I never forget that feeling,” he said. “So, I try my best to not let that happen again, for me to be in that position. But we fell short today, and we just can’t continue doing that. We can’t continue doing that at all. So, I know we let a lot of people down – we let the coaches down as players and everything today. But we’ll be ready to go next week.”
Cleveland faced some key fourth-down situations against the 49ers, but they couldn’t convert, and it cost them.
The Browns and Sanders are a work in progress. Sanders is a rookie quarterback, so it won’t always be pretty. At this point, he has proven that he is a better prospect than Dillon Gabriel, but Sanders still has more to prove.
