Jets’ Glenn: ‘We’re going to figure this thing out and get out of this hole’

For the second time in five seasons, the New York Jets have started the season 0-5 after falling to the Cowboys 37-22 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Additionally, this is the worst start to a coaching tenure in franchise history.

New York has scored points this season, but they are struggling to stop teams. For the third time this season, they allowed over 30 points. Dallas amassed 416 total yards, including 180 yards on the ground.

Glenn, who was a defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, says the Jets’ defense has been inconsistent.

“Up and down, just like we are as a team,” Glenn said about the defense. “I think we came out in the second half, and we caused them to punt the ball like three times in a row. But early in the game, we’re giving up scores. And that’s something that we’ve got to fix. We cannot let a team like this score on their first couple of drives. We can’t do it. And we’ve got to do something. We’ve got to do something to fix that.”

The Jets’ defense also made some history as they became the first team in NFL history to not create a turnover in the first five games of the season, which Glenn says has to improve.

“That’s one of the things you guys are going to hear me say, it’s not giveaways, it’s not turnovers, you have to take the ball away,” Glenn said. “That’s what you do as a defense. That has to be the mentality of the defense: that we have to go and get it because no one is going to give it to us, and we have to be intentional about that, too. We emphasize it, we attack it, we go through it, but, man, it just has to show up. We got to keep doing it. We can’t just sit back and say, ‘We’re not getting them.’ We have to continue to try and emphasize it, and hopefully at some point they’re going to come in bunches for us.”

No team in NFL history has made the playoffs after starting the season 0-5, but Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who completed 32-of-46 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns, says the team will be fine.

“There is a first time for everything, brother,” he said. “But like I said, the team is good. Like I said, we have a locker room full of warriors, a locker room full of men that want to get better. But like I said, we’re not looking at no team has ever made the playoffs after an 0-5 start. That’s the goal at the end of the day. We’re not basing our life off of statistics so to say.”

Ultimately, Glenn feels the Jets will figure things out.

“It’s a tough game,” Glenn said. “It’s a tough game and it’s coached and played by real men. And, listen, I’m going to embrace this challenge, just like any other challenge, and we’re going to figure out, as a team, we’re going to figure out how to get out of this hole. Me being the head coach, we’re 0-5, okay, I got it. But we’re going to figure this thing out and get out of this hole.”
