Eagles’ Fangio on Carter: ‘I think he needs to round into better shape’

Philadelphia Eagles DT Jalen Carter made his season debut on Sunday in the team’s 20-17 victory over the Kansas City.

Carter, who missed the team’s season-opener against the Cowboys after he was ejected, had two total tackles against the Chiefs, but his presence helped the Eagles’ defense limit Kansas City to under 300 total yards(294).

As they get to host the Rams on Sunday, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who believes that the 24-year-old Carter needs to be in better shape, assessed what he saw from his Pro Bowl defensive tackle.

“He had some good rushes,” Fangio said on Tuesday. “I think he needs to round into better shape. Both he and I talked about that, and he readily admits that. I think we’ll even get more. But, I thought for everything that has gone on in his world, I thought he played pretty good.”

Fangio explained why Carter is not in the shape he needs to be at this stage of the season.

“There’s a lot of reasons for that,” he said. “One, he has had a shoulder issue, which has limited his time on the practice field. The shorter practices that we do, the lack of reps that he’s gotten for multiple reasons, all of that.”

According to Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, Carter is working hard to get himself in the best shape possible to be successful.

“He’s working his butt off to be in the best shape of his life just like all our guys,” Sirianni said Wednesday. “We know that if we’re in great shape, then we can play with relentless effort, and we can play with great detail. It’s hard. It’s hard to play with great detail and relentless effort when you’re not in great shape. That’s always a work in progress for every player throughout the year, is just to get yourself into game shape. Getting yourself into game shape and then maintaining it, because there is no substitute for the games. You can run as many gassers as you want, or be on the versa-climber, or the bike as much as you want, but there is no substitute for playing in the game. You get in better shape as you play.

“We prepare them as much as we possibly can to get them there, knowing that they’re not going to play a full game ever in practice or in the preseason, if at all in preseason. But that’s what you’re trying to focus on. Whether we do long drives or whether we do a conditioning drill as far as the way we play, because there’s no substitute for playing live scenarios. You just try to simulate that as much as you possibly can.”

Carter(shoulder) was a limited participant at Eagles practice on Wednesday.

When Carter is on the field, the Eagles’ defense improves, and in reality, due to players not participating in the preseason, these first few games help them get into football shape. Over time, expect Carter to be at his best.
