The Philadelphia Eagles will be without their starting tight end, Dallas Goedert, on Sunday when they travel to Kansas City to battle the Chiefs in the rematch of Super Bowl 59.
Goedert, who had a team-high seven catches in Week 1 against the Cowboys, injured his knee in that game.
In 2024, the 30-year-old missed seven games as he dealt with hamstring and knee injuries, and he has struggled to stay healthy over the years.
Without Goedert, the Eagles will turn to Grant Calcaterra and Kylen Granson. In addition, the team could bring up E.J. Jenkins and Cameron Latu from the practice squad.
On Friday, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni discussed potential replacements for Goedert.
“Grant [Calcaterra]’s done a really good job of stepping in and playing when Dallas hasn’t been able to play these last couple years,” Sirianni said. “Really excited about [TE] Kylen [Granson] and the things he can do, and I like both of our guys that are on practice squad [and they] have had meaningful reps in games, whether [TE] Cam [Latu] was in San Francisco or [TE] EJ [Jenkins] played a lot for us last year and did really good job on special teams for us. Both developing players. So, really excited about those guys, and I think sometimes that’s rare that you have those guys on the practice squad that have played and have contributed and that you can trust right at the beginning of the season. I believe that that’s where that room is and excited about that room.”
While the team is prepared to play without Goedert, it’s undeniable that his absence will be felt. The Eagles will miss what Goedert brings to the table as a blocker, which could impact the run game. However, the team will have to face this challenge head-on. Moving forward, hopefully, Goedert won’t be out for an extended period of time.
