Vikings sign former Commanders DL Jonathan Allen

The Minnesota Vikings have signed former Commanders DT Jonathan Allen, the team announced Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a three-year, $60 million deal.

Allen, 30, was released by Washington earlier this month after the team could not trade him. The two-time Pro Bowler spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Commanders.

This past season, Allen, who missed time due to a pectoral injury, notched 19 total tackles, including three for loss, 3.0 sacks, and seven quarterback hits in eight games (seven starts), missing time due to an injury. The former first-round pick returned for the team’s postseason run, starting each of Washington’s three playoff contests.

In his career, Allen has recorded 401 total tackles, including 60 for loss, 42 sacks, 118 quarterback hits, one interception, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 109 career games (108 starts) with Washington.

The Vikings are familiar with Allen and his game. Head Coach Kevin O’Connell (2017-19), Offensive Coordinator Wes Phillips (2017-18), and Passing Game Coordinator/TEs Coach Brian Angelichio (2019) were part of Washington’s offensive coaching staff during Allen’s tenure with the organization.
