Pistons’ Bickerstaff named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month

The Detroit Pistons have been one of the more surprising teams in the NBA this season, and one reason for that is their head coach, J.B. Bickerstaff.

On Monday, the NBA announced that Bickerstaff had been named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for February. It marks the first time since the late Flip Saunders in February 2008 that a Pistons head coach has won the award, and it is Bickerstaff’s second career Coach of the Month honor.

Bickerstaff, who the Pistons hired in the offseason after spending five seasons for the Cavs, led the team to a 9-3 record for the month, including going 4-0 on the road.  Detroit went on an eight-game win streak to mark its longest such streak since the 2007-08 season.  Six of the Pistons’ nine wins were by double digits, including four by 15-plus points.

Detroit, 34-27, is plus-20 over last season’s total wins and owns the fourth-best road record in the Eastern Conference at 17-13.

The Pistons begin a four-game road trip on Monday when they travel to Utah to face the Jazz.
