On Thursday, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich announced that he will return to the sidelines this season.
“I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season,” Popovich said in a statement on Thursday. “Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.”
According to the team, Popovich suffered a mild stroke on Nov. 2 at the Frost Bank Center. At the time of the announcement of the stroke, Pop’s return had not been determined.
Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson has been the coach since Popovich’s stroke and will continue with that role for the rest of the season.
The 76-year-old, the NBA’s all-time winningest coach, is in his 29th season as Spurs coach.
San Antonio (24-33) will travel to Memphis to play the Grizzlies on Saturday night.
