The San Antonio Spurs announced on Thursday that Wembanyama had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis(blood clot) in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season.
According to the team, the condition was discovered when the 21-year-old Frenchman returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco.
The number one pick in the 2023 draft made his first All-Star team this season, and he averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per contest.
The 2023-24 Rookie-of-the-Year played in 46 games this season, which means he is not eligible for any end-of-season awards. Players must play in 65 games to qualify for such awards.
San Antonio is 3.5 games behind the Warriors for the 10th and final spot in the Play-in Tournament, but without Wemby, their chances of making the playoffs will be tough.
Hopefully, Wembanyama’s condition will not impact his ability to continue his career in the future.
